Duty from Japan
Goods originating in Japan can qualify for preferential (often 0%) duty under the UK-Japan trade agreement if origin is proven. Goods made elsewhere but sold from Japan pay the normal rate. Over £135, 20% import VAT is due either way (gov.uk). Check the Trade Tariff.
Worked example (example numbers, not a real product)
A Japanese-made item costing £300 after conversion, plus £30 shipping:
-
0% duty with proof of origin
-
Import VAT at 20% of £330: £66
-
Courier fee: for DHL, £11 for receivers without an account (DHL)
-
Landed: about £407. If it was made outside Japan and pays 12% duty, about £455.
Compare that with the UK price before you buy. Our calculator(/#calc) does the sums for you.
Duty and VAT figures are estimates; check the retailer checkout and gov.uk.
